Mile High Kite Festival

beech mountain mile high kite festivalIn the mile high town of Beech Mountain, North Carolina on Labor Day weekend, an annual festival is held where people of all ages gather and participate in the tradition of flying kites. This year Beech Mountain welcomes back the Richmond Air Force, Wings Across Carolina Kiting, and Okra Society kiting clubs, making this one of the biggest kiting events. The clubs will start off the festivities by doing an elaborate and colorful kiting display and then there is a dog show that also goes on during the first day of the festival.

Flying kites really is a flashback to your childhood, so children are the main focus of this event. Because of this, the first 300 children will get free kites, which they will then be able to decorate with help and free materials provided by the Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce. Demonstrations are scheduled throughout the entire two days and have their own designated area, while there is also a set area for the general public to fly their kites and have fun.

The festival is more than just flying kites and watching demonstrations though. There are races where children pull parachute kites behind them, face painting, and a wide range of craft and food vendors. All of this fun and excitement is a short ten minute drive up the mountain from your Banner Elk cabin. You and your family and friends can have a great time and then eat at one of the many vendors or a local restaurant before getting back to your cabin rental and relaxing for the night. Cornerstone Cabin Rentals can do this for you and offers a number of quality amenities that are sure to please you during your stay with us. Enjoy the large deck where you can sit and chat with friends while barbequing or admire the beautiful views, or curl up on the couch by the fire place and watch a movie with loved ones, or just lay back in the Jacuzzi tub and reminisce on the wonderful events of the day before heading to bed.
